The new software is available in the form of a flash file through the Cat® Service Information System (SIS). A newer part number may be available. SIS web only displays the latest available flash file.

The v2.0 release and later requires the mandatory upgrade of the following devices for system function:

  • MS9x5 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Receivers v4.5 or later (consider GNSS receiver update time when flashing)

  • MS9x2 GNSS Receivers v5.31 or later (consider GNSS receiver update time when flashing)

Note: The firmware files are prebundled in the software and can be updated from the "Web Interface > Onboard Devices" screen.

Note: Account for approximately 20 minutes per GNSS Receiver, to update the system.

A software version downgrade whether intended or not, will clear several settings and calibrations in the EC520 GRADE Electronic Control Module (ECM). Verify the loaded software version even if that requires checking through the "Web Interface", prior to a new software flash. Perform this verification to avoid inadvertently downgrading the ECM and thus, needing to restore the system.

The v2.2 release of GRADE software continues to support the previous factory-integrated Cat GRADE machines. V2.2 can be utilized on the following machines with EC250 controller systems:

  • D4, D5, D6, and D7 Track-Type Tractors utilizing next generation GRADE with the EC520 controller.

  • Next generation 313, 315, 320, 323, 325, 326, 330, 336, 340, 349, and 352 Excavators (Next Generation Hex (NGH)) utilizing next generation GRADE with EC520 controller.

  • Motor Graders utilizing next generation GRADE with the EC520 controller.

The features of the new EC520 controller software release vary with different Cat® machines.

Features Applicable to All Factory-Integrated Models

The following features are applicable to all factory-integrated models:

  • Machine Control Installer (MC Installer) manages multiple applications on supported Android displays. MC Installer automatically installs upon an upgrade to software v2.2 and ensures that the correct applications are installed on the TD520 display with the correct branding. After installation, the "Web Interface" icon disappears from the Android desktop and is available in the app drawer as a new, generic "Web Interface" icon that is no longer branded.

Note: Android is a trademark owned by Google, LLC.

  • Included "Design Linework" in the popup context menu of "Linework" in the plan view. Lines can now be selected for horizontal guidance directly from the context menu.

  • Improved so that points exported in a ".vcl" file from Trimble Business Center are now available to operators as office points. The office points are now available for point navigation, infield design creation and so on. Operators cannot modify these points.

Note: Trimble is a trademark owned by Trimble Inc.

  • Enabled feature code descriptions to be attached to recorded points for identifying the feature type being recorded such as pipe and edge of curb. The code descriptions are stored in the point description field in the ".fxl" file.

  • Machine positions are now sent to WorksManager even when the systems are in 2D mode, if the left receiver is connected and receiving satellite signals. The same improvement applies to front receivers for cab mount Motor Graders. A correction source is not required, although the left receiver will be displayed in the "System Status". WorksManager uses machine positions to place the machine icon on the project map.

  • Improved to allow operators with "Operator Plus" permission to restore a machine file. To restore a machine file from Earthworks/Cat GRADE, open "System Settings > Manage Machine File". The desired machine file can be selected from the "Machine Settings Files" page.

  • Improved to enable installers to enter the contact into the "Web Interface". The contact details are then available in the "Web Interface" and on the Earthworks/Cat GRADE login screen. To enter contact details, open "Configure > Install Assistant > Installation Contact".

  • Improved to include more detail for wireless mode descriptions when configuring a 450 MHz radio in the "Web Interface".

  • Improved the system start-up time with little to no delay, when many "Correction Sources" are saved.

Feature Applicable to Next Generation Excavators

Re-enabled 2D Advanced or 3D Guidance for Excavators equipped and configured with a Cat® Tilt-Rotator rotation sensor but where the worktool of type "Tilt Bucket" is selected.

Features Applicable to Motor Graders

The following features are only applicable to Motor Graders:

  • Added support for LR410 laser receivers on non-EM410 masts and L-brackets.

  • Upgraded to maintain E-Fence on Motor Graders equipped with Cat® GRADE 3D, when switching to integrated Cross Slope in the machine display.

  • Upgraded to maintain E-Fence on Motor Graders equipped with E-Fence, when the "Positioning Source" is set to Universal Total Station (UTS) guidance. However, the system does not actively track the MT900 target.

  • Validated the blade "Pitch Angle" measurement input in the Cross Slope sensor calibration of the "Install Assistant" to fall between 45 degrees and 90 degrees. This range of angles is acceptable for accurate calibration.

Known Limitations

The new software version has the following known limitations that may be addressed in the future:

  • After installing or upgrading to software v2.2, the "Web Interface" or Cat GRADE app icons may not display on the home screen. Add the missing icons to the home screen using the app drawer.

  • Factory fitted TD5x0 with RC7 firmware will be missing the Cat Operator App launcher. Use the MC Installer to install the Cat Operator App.

  • Exporting a ".tsd" file from Trimble Business Center to Trimble Earthworks as a ".dsz" design is not supported. To use data from a ".tsd" file, export the file as a ".vcl" file from Trimble Business Center and import the ".vcl" file into Trimble Earthworks.

  • When an infield design is created using "Alignment & Section" design, the master alignment may be unavailable to select for horizontal guidance. To select the master alignment, open the "Horizontal Alignment" screen and select "Select Alignment > Master Alignment". The master alignment will be available for selection on the work screen.

  • When using avoidance zones, a machine icon may inaccurately represent machine dimensions. The machine boundary is drawn based on the measurements entered in the "Web Interface" on "Configure > Install Assistant > Additional Machine Dimensions".

  • After upgrading the Cat GRADE app, the system may fail to restart. Turn the system OFF. Ensure that both the EC520 controller and TD520 display are turned OFF, and then turn the system ON again.

  • When switching from using internet corrections to using radio corrections, power cycle the system to ensure that the switch is complete. Even if a "Success" message is received after the switch, the system must be power cycled.

  • When opening the Cat GRADE app, a "Data Error" message may appear, making the application temporarily inaccessible. Turn OFF the system completely and ensure that the EC520 powers down, before repowering to have the best chance of avoiding the error.

  • The "Unlock" button (Technician Request Access button) in the "Web Interface" may stop working. If this issue occurs, refresh the "Web Interface" page of the browser.

  • When selecting a new master alignment, clear the lane sides first. After selecting the master alignment, the lane side may be reselected in the "Lane Guidance" screen. The changes will be applied to ensure the line work updates correctly.

  • In infield designs, when a point is selected and the view is changed, the selected point may not be highlighted in the current view. However, the point is still selected in the previous view. Edits made on the current view are applied to the point selected, which may be highlighted in another view. To edit a point on the current view, select the point before editing.

  • Mapping may not be displayed on new slope designs, even when the mapping icon is engaged. To use mapping, switch to an office design, infield design, or lane guidance.

  • Within the Cat GRADE app, the "Start" button may take a few minutes to become available. This delay may occur when the SNM94x needs to be configured on start-up.

  • Excavators using GNSS or UTS for single 3D guidance may lose the Center of Rotation (COR) while tram. Also, the machine boundary overlay circle may expand in to an avoidance zone. If this issue occurs, the avoidance zone breach operational state may not be displayed. To resolve this issue, stop the machine and rotate until you regain the COR and the operational state displays correctly.

  • When performing a GNSS mast measure-up on Cat 07 series Excavators, do not disconnect the laser catcher from the harness too early. Disconnecting the laser catcher from the harness too early may result in failed horizontal and vertical precision values. Keep the laser catcher connected during the measure-up and disconnect the laser catcher only when prompted.

  • When installing a laser catcher on a Cat 07 machine, the "Auto-Accept" option may be unavailable when benching the laser. Tap the "Accept" button on the application to accept the bench.

  • When GNSS receivers are not receiving base station corrections, Cross Slope in the machine display may not show values for Motor Grader with mastless GRADE 3D. To use the Cross Slope system when the base station corrections are not available, configure the Cat GRADE system to the 2D mode.

  • When E-Fence is enabled in the machine settings, progressing through the calibrations performed through the "Web Interface" may not be possible. Disable the E-Fence in the machine settings before performing any calibrations.

  • When performing a blade rotation calibration through the "Web Interface", if the blade is not started square, an error message may be displayed. Before performing this calibration, ensure that the blade is square and aligned with the square blade marks on the circle.

  • When the park brake of the machine is OFF, the "Test" buttons may be unavailable on the "Valve Test" page in the "Web Interface". Even after the park brake is put ON, the "Test" buttons may remain unavailable. Exit and reopen the "Valve Test" page, with the park brake ON, to enable the "Test" buttons.

  • When using a GNSS or UTS "Positioning Source" on a Motor Grader, and "Cross Slope" mode is selected in the "Job Setup", the "Northings", "Eastings", and "Elevation" text items may display invalid coordinates.

  • Calibrations performed at low idle may cause an error to occur. To prevent this error, complete body turn around calibrations, pass match calibrations, and valve calibrations with the engine at high idle must be performed.

  • Incompatible with Terrain v7.2 or earlier.

Known Limitations (Not Expected to Change)

  • When adding a radio in the "Web Interface", each field depends on the values entered in the previous fields. Also, field validation takes approximately 30 seconds after a value is entered. To ensure field validation, enter a value into a field and wait for 30 seconds before populating the next field. If all fields are populated without waiting 30 seconds between each field, the values will appear to be valid. However, those values will be marked invalid when submitted, even when the values are valid.

  • Cross Slope automatic control on Track-Type Tractors may become suspended when the implement lever is actuated in either the blade lift, lower, or tilt functions.

  • If the "Slope Assist" screen is active on the machine display, "Autos" cannot be activated in the Cat GRADE app on the TD5x0 nor the "Web Interface". To allow "Autos" to be activated, return the machine display to the home screen.

  • An infield design that is selected currently, cannot be deleted. To delete the current design, load a new design and the previous design can be deleted.

  • When a machine is in "Autos" and captures a system snap is from within either the "Web Interface" or Terrain operator interface, "Autos" may stop. If this issue occurs, users must turn ON "Autos".

  • For some languages, the length of the text describing the state of "Web Interface" toggle switches exceeds the space available. The full text displays when hovering over the toggle switch with the mouse pointer.

  • Exporting a ".tsd" file from Trimble Business Center to Cat GRADE as a ".dsz" design may not be supported. To use data from a ".tsd" file, export the file as ".vcl" from Trimble Business Center and import the ".vcl" file in to Cat GRADE.
