Start By:

  1. Separate the engines. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engines - Separate".

  2. Remove the crankshaft rear seal and the wear sleeve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal and Wear Sleeve - Remove".


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the engine oil. The capacity of the front engine is approximately 210 L (55 US gal).

  2. Remove bolts (1) that are located at the rear of the engine. Loosen bolts (2) that are located at the front of the engine.

  3. Remove the engine oil pan.

  4. Attach a suitable lifting device to lifting eye (3) that is located on the rear of the engine. Lift the rear of the engine in order to achieve approximately 13.00 mm (0.500 inch) of clearance between plate assembly (4) and rail assembly (5). The weight of the engine is approximately 7257 kg (16000 lb).

  5. Install cribbing underneath the engine in order to support the engine.

  6. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove camshaft drive gears (6).

  7. Attach Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to flywheel housing (7).

  8. Remove bolts (8), bolts (9), bolts (10), bolts (11), bolts (12), and bolts (13) in order to remove flywheel housing (7). The weight of flywheel housing (7) is approximately 340 kg (750 lb).
