RR-250 RECLAIMER & SS-250 SOIL STABILIZER VEHICLE SYSTEMS Rotor Drive Shaft Caterpillar

Rotor Drive Shaft
`

Remove Rotor Drive Shaft

1. Support the drive shaft (1), then remove the mounting bolts and nuts (2) from the forward flange of the drive shaft.

2. Loosen the dust cap (3), then slide the ends of the drive shaft toward each other to shorten the drive shaft length. Tighten the dust cap.

3. Remove the mounting bolts and nuts (4) from the rearward end flange.

4. Move the drive shaft up out of the rotor drive compartment.

Install Rotor Drive Shaft

1. Move the drive shaft (1) into the rotor drive compartment and move the rearward end flange into position.

2. Install the mounting bolts and nuts (4).

3. Loosen the dust cap (3) and move the forward end flange into position.

4. Install the mounting bolts and nuts (2).

5. Tighten the dust cap.

Disassemble Rotor Drive Shaft

Start By:

a. remove rotor drive shaft

1. Make sure arrow marks (1) are stamped on the shaft and sleeve yoke. If marks are not easily seen, mark the shaft and sleeve yoke so that when reassembled they will be in exactly the same relative position. The sleeve yoke lugs must be in the same plane as the stub yoke lugs to prevent excessive vibration during operation.

2. Unscrew the dust cap (2) from the sleeve yoke and slide the drive shaft apart.

3. Bend down the locking lugs (3) of the lock straps with a screwdriver and remove the capscrews (4).

4. Remove a needle bearing and retaining cap subassembly.

a. Using a large pair of channel lock pliers on the retaining cap edges, turn the bearing and retaining cap subassembly while at the same time lifting upward to remove the subassembly from the yoke hole.

5. Turn the joint over and insert a soft round drift (5) into the yoke hole and against the journal cross. The drift should have a flat face about .8 mm (.031 in) smaller in diameter than the yoke hole.

6. Tap the drift until the opposite needle bearing is free.

7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for the remaining retaining cap and bearing subassemblies.

8. Remove the journal cross (6) by sliding it to one side of the yoke (7) and tilting it over the top of the yoke lug.

Assemble Rotor Drive Shaft

1. Clean all parts in a suitable nonflammable cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to remain in the cleaner for some time to loosen particles of grease or foreign matter.

2. Remove burrs or rough spots from machined surfaces.

3. Clean the needle bearings with a short stiff brush and blow out with compressed air.

4. Work a small quantity of SAE 140 oil into each bearing cap and turn the needle bearing on the trunnion to check for wear. If the needle bearings are worn, replace both the bearings and journal cross.

5. Inspect the journal cross for excessive wear. If the journal cross must be replaced, replace both the needle bearings and the journal cross.

6. If a new journal and bearing kit with seals has not been used, install four new seals in the journal retainers.

7. With the relief valve facing the flange yoke, insert one trunnion of the journal cross (6) between the yoke lugs and into the hole in one yoke lug.

8. Tilt the journal cross until the trunnion will clear the hole in the opposite lug.

9. Insert a needle bearing and retaining cap (8) subassembly into a yoke lug hole.

10. Taking care not to mar any surfaces, press into place with an arbor press or tap into place with a soft round drift.

11. Repeat step 9 and 10 for the remaining needle bearing and retaining cap subassemblies.

12. Position the lock straps (9), install the capscrews, and, using a screwdriver, bend the locking lugs up against the capscrews.

13. Inspect the cork washer inside the dust cap (2) and replace if necessary.

14. Lubricate the slip joint splines thoroughly and, making sure the arrow marks (1) are in line, assemble the shaft.

15. Inspect the drive shaft for the following items:

a. No damage or dents on drive shaft tubing which could cause unbalance or weaken the tube.

b. Splines in the slip joint slide freely with a slight drag from the spline seal.

c. Bearings flex and are free from excessive bind. A slight drag is the most desirable condition on a new universal joint. Excessive looseness is not desirable due to resulting unbalance.

d. End yoke flanges are free of burrs, paint, and foreign substances which would not allow proper seating at assembly.

End By:

a. install rotor drive shaft
