    ------ WARNING! ------

Improper assembly of parts that are spring loaded can cause bodily injury.

To prevent possible injury, follow the established assembly procedure and wear protective equipment.

  16. Use Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to install spindle assembly (11). The weight of spindle assembly (11) is approximately 105 kg (232 lb).

  17. Install four of bolts (12) equally spaced.

  18. Tighten four of bolts (12) in 90 degrees intervals in a crisscross pattern.

Note: To avoid damaging the O-ring seals for the rod adjusters, tighten bolts (12) to spindle assembly (11) in a crisscross pattern, so the spindle assembly (11) remains level during installation.

  19. Install the remaining bolts (12) in crisscross pattern.

  20. Install bearing cone (10).

  21. Perform the following steps for the shimming procedure:

      Illustration 16g03860043

      Illustration 17g03860053

    1. Measure the thickness of retainer plate (8) at the locations of the three small holes (X). Calculate the average thickness of the retainer.

    2. Use two people to position hub assembly (9). The weight of hub assembly (9) is approximately 30 kg (65 lb).

    3. Install retainer plate (8) without any shims. Install three bolts (7) evenly spaced next to three small holes (X).

    4. Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 100 N·m (74 lb ft). Rotate the wheel several revolutions.

    5. Again, tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 100 N·m (74 lb ft). Again, rotate the wheel several revolutions.

    6. Loosen bolts (7).

    7. Torque bolts (7) to 40 N·m (30 lb ft). Rotate the wheel for several revolutions.

    8. Repeat Step 21g until the torque of bolts (7) remains at 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

    9. Use a depth micrometer to measure through three small holes (X) in retainer plate (8) to the end of the spindle. Use the three measurements to determine the average depth.

Note: Be sure not to place the depth micrometer on the raised part markings on the retainer plate.

    10. Subtract the average thickness determined in Step 21a from the average depth determined in Step 21i. The outcome is the dimension of the gap that is between the end of the spindle and retainer plate (8).

    11. Use two people to position hub assembly (9). The weight of hub assembly (9) is approximately 30 kg (65 lb). Remove retainer plate (8) from the spindle. Install a shim pack that is equal to the dimension (average gap) from Step 21j plus 0.10 mm. The tolerance range from the shim pack is ± 0.025 mm.

    12. Install retainer plate (8) and all bolts (7). Tighten bolts (7) in a crossing sequence to a torque of 150 ± 20 N·m (111 ± 15 lb ft).

  22. Install wear indicator (6).

    Illustration 19g03798387

  23. Install speed sensor (4) and bolt (5).

    Illustration 20g03798383

  24. Use a suitable lifting device to remove spindle, service brake, and wheel (3) from Tooling (A). The weight of spindle, service brake, and wheel (3) is approximately 463 kg (1020 lb).

    Illustration 21g03798380

  25. Install gear (2) and retaining ring (1).

End By:

  1. Install the spindle, the service brake, and the wheel.

  2. Install the final drive.

  3. Reset the service brake wear indicator. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Service Brake Wear Indicator (New Brake Disc) - Reset" M0073366. for the correct procedure.

  4. Reset the service brake piston. Refer to "Brake Piston - Adjust or Reset" within Testing and Adjusting, "Service Brake Wear Indicator - Check" , M0073366. for the correct procedure.

  5. Purge the service brakes. Refer to Systems Operations, "Service Brake Air - Purge" for the correct procedure.
