Start By:

  1. Install the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Remove and Install".

  2. Remove the rear tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove".

  3. Release the oil pressure from the braking system. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "System Pressure - Release".

  4. Remove the rear drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Shaft (Rear) - Remove and Install".

Note: SERVICE DATA: TOOLING (ZZ) WILL NOT BE IDENTIFIED IN PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE REMOVAL OR THE INSTALLATION. THIS TOOLING IS SHOWN IN ORDER TO ASSIST THE EXPERIENCED SERVICEMAN.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before you begin the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Note: Put identification marks on all hoses, on all hose assemblies, on all wires, and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This helps to prevent fluid loss, and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Do not disconnect or remove hoses or fittings until all pressure in the system has been relieved.

Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.


  1. Drain the rear axle housing and the final drive assemblies into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the capacity of the rear axle housing and the final drive assemblies. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil (With Axle Oil Cooler) - Change" or Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil (Without Axle Oil Cooler) - Change" for the correct draining procedure.

  2. Remove five bolts (1). Remove fender (2).

  3. Place left side fender (3) in the position shown in Illustration 2.

  4. Disconnect hose assembly (4).

  5. Disconnect hose assemblies (5) and (6).

    The upper drive shaft is removed for picture clarity

  6. Disconnect lubrication hose assembly (8) from the rear support.

  7. Remove bolt (7) and bolt (9) from the clips.

  8. Disconnect lubrication hose assembly (10) from the front support.

  9. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to both sides of the rear oscillating axle. The weight of the rear oscillating axle is approximately 1595 kg (3517 lb).

  10. Install a suitable stand under both sides of the rear oscillating axle as shown in Illustration 7.

  11. Disconnect hose assembly (13).

  12. Remove two locknuts (12).

  13. Remove nuts (11).

  14. Remove two bolts (14).

  15. Disconnect hose assembly (18).

  16. Remove two locknuts (16).

  17. Remove nuts (15).

  18. Remove two bolts (17).

  19. Remove two locknuts (22), two nuts (21) and two bolts (19) from the front support.

  20. Remove two locknuts (23), two nuts (24) and two bolts (20) from the front support.

  21. Remove the stands from under both sides of the rear oscillating axle. Lower the rear oscillating axle to the ground.
