Cylinders equipped with lock valves can remain pressurized for very long periods of time, even with the hoses removed.

Failure to relieve pressure before removing a lock valve or disassembling a cylinder can result in personal injury or death.

Ensure all pressure is relieved before removing a lock valve or disassembling a cylinder.


Note: Put identification marks on all hoses, on all hose assemblies, on all wires, and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This helps to prevent fluid loss, and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Release the system pressure. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "System Pressure - Release".

  2. Install Tooling (A) onto the hydraulic tank. Attach an air supply hose onto Tooling (A). Apply 138 kPa (20 psi). This procedure will pull a vacuum on the hydraulic system.

  3. Install lock bolt (1) for the wheel lean lock.

  4. Disconnect hose assemblies (2).

  5. Attach a suitable lifting device to wheel lean cylinder (3). The weight of wheel lean cylinder (3) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).

  6. Remove bolts (7). Remove plate (8). Remove pin (9). Remove bolt (6) and remove retainer (5).

  7. Drive pin (4) (not shown) toward the front end of the machine enough to remove wheel lean cylinder (3).

    Note: Do not remove pin (4).

  8. Use the suitable lifting device in order to remove wheel lean cylinder (3) from the machine.

(1) Use a 46 mm socket and torque the bolt. ... 1800 ± 200 N·m (1325 ± 150 lb ft)

(2) Lubricate sealing lips with a thin covering of the lubricant that is being sealed.

(3) Apply Tooling (D) to the wiper seal groove before you assemble the wiper seal to the head.

(4) Use Tooling (E) and lubricate the threads with clean grease. Torque the cylinder head to 600 ± 130 N·m (440 ± 95 lb ft).

(5) Install the bearing 7.4 ± 0.5 mm (0.29 ± 0.02 inch) below the face.

(6) Install the bearing 7.7 ± 0.5 mm (0.30 ± 0.02 inch) below the face.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device onto wheel lean cylinder (3). The weight of wheel lean cylinder (3) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb). Use the suitable lifting device in order to position wheel lean cylinder (3) onto the machine.

  2. Install pin (4) (not shown). Position retainer (5) and install bolt (6).

    Note: The distance between retainer (5) and the face of the rod end must be a minimum of 0.8 mm (0.03 inch).

  3. Install pin (9). Position plate (8) and install bolts (7).

  4. Connect hose assemblies (2).

  5. Remove lock bolt (1) for the wheel lean lock.

  6. Remove Tooling (A) from the hydraulic tank.

  7. Check the hydraulic system oil level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Hydraulic System Oil Level - Check".
