This diagnostic code is associated with the speed dial potentiometer for the left conveyor on the left station. The FMI 08 means that the ECM has determined that the signal frequency or the signal pulse width is not within the expected range.

The output frequency of the sensor is approximately 5000 Hz. The duty cycle of the signal varies as the position sensor moves. The duty cycle varies from 2% to 98%.

The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:

  • The sensor has failed.

  • Intermittent connections or poor connections

  • Mechanical devices are loose.

  • The ECM has failed. ECM failure is unlikely.

Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 0975 FMI 08 is active before performing this procedure.

Note: Use the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter for the measurements in this procedure.

System Response:

When this diagnostic code is active, the following occurs:

  • The machine ECM maintains the pre-fault value until a neutral reset occurs.

  • The sensor defaults to 50% after the neutral reset has taken place.

  • The indicator lamp on the monitoring system will illuminate.

  • The action lamp is ON.

Test Step 1. CHECK THE SUPPLY VOLTAGE AT THE SENSOR.

  1. Remove the back panel from the left operator station.

  1. Do not disconnect the harness connector from the sensor.

  1. At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert a 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe along the voltage supply wire (contact A).

  1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the ON position.

  1. Measure the voltage from contact A to frame ground.

Expected Result:

The voltage is 8 ± 0.5 DCV.

Results:

  • OK - The voltage is 8 ± 0.5 DCV. Proceed to Test Step 3.

  • NOT OK - The voltage is not 8 ± 0.5 DCV. Proceed to Test Step 2.

Test Step 2. CHECK THE SUPPLY VOLTAGE TO RELAY 1.

  1. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the ON position.

  1. Disconnect the relay.

  1. At the connector for the relay, measure the voltage supply (wire K983-BU) to frame ground.

Expected Result:

The voltage is 8 ± 0.5 DCV.

Results:

  • OK - The voltage is 8 ± 0.5 DCV.

    Repair: Replace relay 1.

    Proceed to Test Step 8.

  • NOT OK - The voltage is not 8 ± 0.5 DCV.

    Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    Proceed to Test Step 8.

Test Step 3. CHECK THE SIGNAL AT THE SENSOR.

  1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, remove the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe from contact A and insert the probe along the signal wire (contact C).

  1. At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe along the ground wire (contact B).

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Monitor the signal of the sensor with the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter .

  1. Without disconnecting the sensor or the hardware that is associated with the sensor from the machine, take the sensor through the full operating range of the sensor.

Expected Result:

Testing and Adjusting

Results:

  • OK - The sensor signal responds correctly. The sensor is operating correctly. Proceed to Test Step 5.

  • NOT OK - The sensor signal does not respond correctly. The sensor is NOT operating correctly. Proceed to Test Step 4.

Test Step 4. CHECK THE GROUND WIRE FOR AN OPEN CIRCUIT.

  1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the harness connector from the sensor.

  1. Disconnect the connector from the diode block for the left station.

  1. Check the wire N701-PK from contact B at the sensor to contact 7 at the diode block for an open.

Expected Result:

The resistance should be less than 5 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 7.

  • NOT OK - The resistance that is measured is greater than 5 ohms.

    Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness.

    STOP

Test Step 5. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT AT THE ECM.

  1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Insert the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probes into the back of the ECM connector along J1-62 (wire K727-GY) and J1-12 (wire A275-BK).

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Monitor the signal of the sensor with the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter .

  1. Without disconnecting the sensor or the hardware that is associated with the sensor from the machine, take the sensor through the full operating range of the sensor.

Expected Result:

The sensor signal responds in the manner that is described at the beginning of this procedure.

Results:

  • OK - The sensor signal responds correctly. The sensor is operating correctly. Proceed to Test Step 8.

  • NOT OK - The sensor signal does not respond correctly. The harness has failed. Proceed to Test Step 6.

Test Step 6. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT IN THE HARNESS.

  1. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the machine harness connectors from the sensor and the ECM.

  1. Measure the resistance between contact J1-62 (wire K727-GY) and all contacts that are used in the machine harness connectors for the ECM.

Expected Result:

The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The circuit is correct. Proceed to Test Step 7.

  • NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms. The signal circuit is shorted to another circuit in the harness.

    Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP

Test Step 7. CHECK THE POTENTIOMETER

  1. Access the potentiometer that is located inside the operator console on the left station.

  1. Attach a 6V-7070 Digital Multimeter with 7X-1710 Multimeter Probes to the receptacle of the potentiometer without disconnecting the connectors. Connect the ground lead to pin "B" and connect the signal lead to connector pin "C".

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the engine start switch to the ON position, but do NOT start the engine.

  1. Operate the potentiometer.

Expected Result:

The resistance should be 0 ohms at the minimum setting of the potentiometer. As the dial for the potentiometer is increased, the resistance will increase to 940 to 960 ohms at the maximum setting.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance measures 0 ohms at the minimum setting of the potentiometer. As the dial for the potentiometer is increased, the resistance increases to 940 to 960 ohms at the maximum setting. The potentiometer is operating correctly.

    Repair: Replace the sensor.

    Proceed to Test Step 8.

  • NOT OK - The resistance measurements for the potentiometer are NOT correct.

    Repair: Replace the potentiometer.

    Proceed to Test Step 8.

Test Step 8. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS

  1. Inspect the harness connectors and clean the contacts of the machine harness connectors.

  1. Reconnect all harness connectors.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Operate the machine.

  1. Check the status of the CID 0975 FMI 08.

Expected Result:

The CID 0975 FMI 08 is not active.

Results:

  • OK - The CID 0975 FMI 08 is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor connection or a short at one of the connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal operation.STOP

  • NOT OK - The CID 0975 FMI 08 is active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected. The ECM may have failed.

    Repair: ECM failure is unlikely. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the failure is not found, replace the ECM. See the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    STOP
