Problem

The transmission does not operate in any speed or the transmission does not engage in all speeds.

Probable Causes

  • Low oil level in transmission

  • The linkage for the transmission control is loose. The linkage for the transmission control is not adjusted properly.

  • Failure of the oil pump or failure of the oil pump drive.

  • Air leaks on the inlet side of the pump.

  • Internal oil leakage inside the transmission

  • The modulating relief valve is not properly adjusted. The modulating relief valve is not closing.

  • Mechanical failure in the transmission

  • Mechanical failure in the differential

  • Mechanical failure in the final drive

Problem

The transmission will not shift.

Probable Causes

  • Low oil pressure in transmission

  • Inside linkage adjustment is not correct or outside linkage adjustment is not correct.

  • Air leaks on inlet side of pump.

  • The load piston is not closing.

Problem

The transmission engages very suddenly, and the transmission shifts roughly.

Probable Causes

  • Primary setting of relief valve is not correct.

  • The linkage for the transmission control linkage is loose. The linkage for the transmission control is not correctly adjusted.

  • The load piston is not closing.

  • The valve springs are weak. The valve springs are broken.

Problem

The Transmission shifts are sluggish.

Probable Causes

  • Low oil pressure in the transmission.

  • Inside linkage adjustment is not correct or outside linkage adjustment is not correct.

  • Air leaks on inlet side of pump.

  • The load piston is not closing.

Problem

The transmission does not operate in first and fifth speeds in forward or in reverse.

Probable Causes

  • No. 6 clutch is not engaging properly because of low oil pressure.

  • No. 6 clutch is not engaging properly because the clutch discs and plates have too much wear.

Problem

The transmission does not operate in second and sixth speeds in forward or in reverse.

Probable Causes

  • No. 5 clutch is not engaging properly because of low oil pressure.

  • No. 5 clutch is not engaging properly because the clutch discs and plates have too much wear.

Problem

The transmission does not operate in third speed or in seventh speed.

Probable Cause

  • No. 4 clutch is not engaging properly because of low oil pressure.

  • No. 4 clutch is not engaging properly because the clutch discs and plates have too much wear.

Problem

The Transmission does not operate in fourth speed or in eighth speed.

Probable Causes

  • No. 3 clutch is not engaging properly because of low oil pressure.

  • No. 3 clutch is not engaging properly because the clutch discs and plates have too much wear.

Problem

The transmission operates in all the forward speeds and the transmission does not operate in any reverse speeds.

Probable Cause

  • No. 2 clutch is not engaging properly because of low oil pressure.

  • No. 2 clutch is not engaging properly because the clutch discs and plates have too much wear.

Problem

. The transmission operates in all the reverse speeds and the transmission does not operate in any forward speeds.

Probable Cause

  • No. 1 clutch is not engaging properly because of low oil pressure.

  • No. 1 clutch is not engaging properly because the clutch discs and plates have too much wear.

Problem

The transmission does not shift out of a speed when the transmission control lever is moved to another speed.

Probable Causes

  • The control linkage is damaged or the linkage is not adjusted properly.

  • The control cable is damaged or the control cable is not adjusted properly.

  • The clutch is not releasing properly.

Problem

When the transmission engages, the machine does not move and the engine stops.

Probable Causes

  • The parking brake is applied.

  • Mechanical failure in the final drive

  • The differential has broken gears and the differential cannot turn.

  • Too many transmission clutches are engaging at the same time in the transmission.

Problem

The Transmission does not operate in first speed through fourth speed. The transmission will operate in fifth speed through eighth speed.

Probable Causes

  • No. 7 clutch is not engaging properly because of low oil pressure.

  • No. 7 clutch is not engaging properly because the clutch discs and plates have too much wear.

Problem

The transmission operates in first through fourth speed. The transmission will not operate in fifth speed through eighth speed.

Probable Causes

  • No. 8 clutch is not engaging properly because of low oil pressure.

  • No. 8 clutch is not engaging properly because the clutch discs and plates have too much wear.

Problem

The transmission overheats.

Probable Causes

  • Low oil level in the transmission

  • The core of the oil cooler is restricted .

  • There is excessive resistance in the clutch.

  • Low oil flow as a result of wear to the pump.

  • The temperature gauge is malfunctioning.

Problem

Pump noise is not normal.

Probable Causes

  • The pump makes loud sounds at short intervals. This condition is caused by pump cavitation.

  • A constant loud noise is an indication of pump failure.
