The initialization is an internal process within the main display module. During the initialization, the main display module communicates on the Cat data link. From this information, the module learns about the machine. For example, the module learns that the information for the engine oil pressure is coming from an engine ECM.

Normally, monitor initialization is needed when the main display module is replaced or swapped from another machine.

Procedures For Monitor Initialization

AVSpare Electronic Technician (Cat® ET) Configuration Procedure

This procedure is for all pavers covered in this manual, except the AP655C, S/N prefix CDG. The monitor initialization is accomplished by entering the full serial number of the machine, in the product ID field, within Cat® ET.

  1. Ensure that the key start switch is in the OFF position.

  1. Connect the communications adapter to the computer and the diagnostic service tool connector.

  1. Turn the key start switch to the RUN position and Start Cat® ET.

  1. Cat® ET will initiate communications with the ECMs on the machine. Select the monitor ECM.

  1. On the top menu, go to the "Service" and select "Configuration" from the drop-down menu.

  1. In the right pane of the configuration page, double click on "Product ID." A "Change Parameter Value" pop-up box will appear.
    See Illustration 1.

  1. In "New Value", enter the complete serial number for the machine and click the "OK" and "Yes" buttons to complete the new value.

    STOP.

Monitor Harness Code Procedure (for AP655C, S/N prefix CDG only)

Initialization is needed when there is a change in the harness code. However, when a previously used main display module is used as a replacement, initialization of the module may be necessary. Faults that cannot be explained with the AVS data link can occur if the main display module is not initialized correctly. The service person must activate the initialization when the main display module has been previously used. Initialization is used if the module was taken out of an application that had the same machine code as the display module that is to be removed.

Initialization requires that the display module is powered up with a valid harness code that is different than the harness code when last powered down. For a list of valid harness codes, see the table for Machine Codes in System Operation, "Harness Code Mode".

  1. Code input configuration.

    1. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.

    1. Determine whether the harness code inputs are hard wired in the machine harness or accessible at a harness code plug. Use the Electrical System Schematic in the Service Manual for the machine.

      Expected Result: There is a harness code plug.

      Results:

      • YES - There is a harness code plug. Remove the harness code plug. Proceed to 3.

      • NO - The harness code inputs are hard wired in the machine harness. Proceed to 2.

  1. Hard wired procedure.

    1. Disconnect the machine harness from the main display module.

    1. At the machine harness connector for the main display module, remove the wire for one of the following contacts (3, 6, 12, 16, 22 or, 31). Choose one that is connected to ground.

    1. With tape, secure the removed connector contact out of the way.

    1. Reconnect the machine harness to the main display.

      Results:

      • CONTINUE - Proceed to 3.

  1. Reconnection and verification.

    1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switches to the ON position.

    1. Various indicators in the AVSpare Monitoring System display area will illuminate. Wait 10 seconds.

    1. Turn the key switch to the OFF position.

    1. Depending on the previous procedure that was performed, either reinstall the harness code plug (from "Code input configuration") or reinstall the ground connector contact (from "Hard wired procedure").

    1. Make sure that the main display module successfully completes the self test, see Testing and Adjusting, "System Self Test".

    1. Check the machine code. See System Operation, "Harness Code Mode".

      Expected Result: The display module has successfully completed the self test.

      Results:

      • OK - The display module successfully completed the self test. STOP.

      • NOT OK - The display module did not complete the self test. Exit this procedure. Determine the cause of the failure and repeat "Initialization". STOP.
