Transmission ECM

The following is a list of codes that are associated with the Cat® Data Link of the machine.

Table 1
  Transmission ECM (MID 081)
J1939  CDL  Code Description  System Response
590-9  Engine Control Module : Abnormal Update Rate  Communication between the Transmission ECM and the Engine ECM will be intermittent. Failure codes or indicators may be active that cannot be explained.
590-14  Engine Control Module : Special Instruction  Some transmission and engine-related functions are disabled.
596-9  Implement Control : Abnormal Update Rate  Communication between the Transmission ECM and the Implement ECM will be intermittent. Failure codes or indicators may be active that cannot be explained.
596-14  Implement Control : Special Instruction  Some machine and implement-related functions are disabled
2448-9  Graphical Display Module : Abnormal Update Rate  Communication between the Transmission ECM and the Information Display module will be intermittent or disabled.
3583-9  Switch Panel #1 : Abnormal Update Rate  This failure results in events that are logged against the Transmission ECM that cannot be explained directly. The Transmission ECM cannot communicate with the switch panel or appears to communicate intermittently.

Each Cat Data Link circuit is an input and output of select electronic control modules. The data link is designed to carry communications between the electronic control modules. The data link is not a visible component. The data link consists of internal control circuits and the connecting harness wiring.

The diagnostic code is caused by abnormal communications between the ECM and a specific ECM module via the Data Link. The update rate is not correct. If a diagnostic code is present, correct the related diagnostic code.

This failure results in events that are logged against an ECM that cannot be explained directly. The ECM cannot communicate with another ECM or the ECM appears to communicate intermittently.

The 248-9 DTC is used by the ECM as a companion code and indicates a Cat Data Link problem. This DTC indicates that the ECM has lost all communication with another ECM. This companion code is simultaneously activated with the 590-9 DTC.

Note: The 248-9 DTC will never be activated by the ECM as a stand-alone diagnostic code.

(1) This multimeter can use an RS232C cable to connect to a Laptop computer or Dataview tool gp for troubleshooting.

Prior to beginning this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in this circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, secure, and in good condition. Check the wiring for pinch points or abrasions. Look for and repair areas that indicate wires are exposed. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing a troubleshooting procedure.

  1. Identify the active FMI code associated with the components.

  2. Determine which code is present and use the list below to determine which procedure to follow.

  • FMI 9 diagnostic code, proceed to "FMI 9".

  • FMI 14 diagnostic code, proceed to "FMI 14".

Table 4
Verify The Hardware And The Software Part Numbers(1)
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results
1. The part number of the flash software for the ECM.

2. The part number of all components related to the faulty Data Link Circuit.
All part numbers are correct.  Result: All part numbers are correct.

Proceed to "Check For Shorts", Table 5.

Result: All the part numbers are not correct.

Repair: A module has the wrong part number or the incorrect flash software is installed. Replace the incorrect module with a module that has the correct part number. Flash the correct software. See the Troubleshooting, "ECM Software - Install" section of this manual for additional information.

Proceed to "Check If The Diagnostic Code Remains", Table 7.
(1) Consult your Technical Communicator for the correct part numbers of the flash software.

Table 5
Check For Shorts
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results
1. Turn the key start switch and disconnect switch to theOFF position.

2. Disconnect the machine harness connectors from all electronic control modules that use the suspect Cat Data Link.

3. At the machine harness for the ECM, measure the resistance between the positive contact for the Cat Data Link. Measure the resistance of all other positive contacts used in J1 and J2 harness connectors.

4. At the machine harness for the ECM, measure the resistance between the negative contact for the Cat Data Link. Measure all other negative contacts used in J1 and J2 harness connectors.
The reading is greater than 5K Ω.  Result: The harness circuit resistance is correct.

Proceed to Check For Open Harness, Table 6.

Result: A reading is less than 5 Ω. The machine harness has failed.

Repair: Short between frame ground and the contacts of the Cat Data Link circuit in the machine harness. Repair or replace the machine harness.

Note: A resistance that is greater than 5 Ω but less than 5K Ω would indicate a loose connection or a corroded connection in the circuit. A resistance measurement that is greater than 5K Ω would indicate an open in the circuit.

Proceed to "Check If The Diagnostic Code Remains", Table 7.

Table 6
Check For Open Harness
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results
1. The key start switch and disconnect switch are OFF.

2. All related electronic control modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.

3. At the machine harness connector for one ECM, place a jumper wire between the positive and negative contacts for the Cat Data Link.

4. At the machine harness connector for another ECM, measure resistance between the positive and negative contacts for the Cat Data Link.
Reading is less than 5 Ω.  Result: The Cat Data Link circuit in the machine harness is correct.

Proceed to "Check If The Diagnostic Code Remains", Table 7.

Result: A reading is greater than 5K Ω. The machine harness has failed.

Repair: The Cat Data Link circuit is open in the machine harness.

Table 7
Check If The Diagnostic Code Remains
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results
1. Reconnect all harness connectors. Return machine to normal operating condition.

2. Turn the start switch and the disconnect switch ON.

4. Operate the machine.

5. Stop the machine and engage the safety.

6. Check if the diagnostic code is active.
The diagnostic code is no longer present.  Result: The diagnostic code does not exist currently. The initial diagnostic code may have been caused by poor electrical connection or short at one of the harness connections. Resume machine operation.

STOP.

Result: The diagnostic trouble code has not been corrected. If the diagnostic code has not been corrected after performing the procedure a second time, the ECM may require replacement.

Prior to replacing the ECM, always contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership for possible consultation with AVSpare. This consultation may effect repair time.
