Testing the Hydraulic Flow of the Piston Pumps (Propel)

The flow test for the piston pump (propel) will measure the hydraulic oil flow rate in order to determine if the pump is operating within the parameters. Due to the gauge of the hoses and flow rate of the propel system, a more suitable test has been established. This test will measure the hydraulic flow rate by examining the accuracy and speed of the propel pumps.

Required Tools

Hydraulic test procedures may be performed using either one of the following test equipment:

  • AVSpare DataView

  • Standard Photo-Tachometer

AVSpare DataView

AVSpare DataView is a PC based diagnostic tool. The AVSpare DataView accepts a maximum of nine standard AVSpare sensors for measurements on the machine. The signal is transmitted to a personal computer and the information is displayed.

Photo-Pickup and Base with Extension

Test Procedure

Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause serious injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the hydraulic system.

Injury to personnel can result if they are not in the operator's view. Allow only essential personnel near the machine, and make sure the personnel are in the operator's view when testing, to prevent injury. Make sure checks are done in an open area.

Perform the following procedure before you perform the test procedure that follows:

  • Park the machine on a level area that is clear from all equipment and material.

  • Verify that the service brake system and the parking brake system are in good working order.

  • Clear all personnel from the area that is surrounding the machine.

  • Apply the parking brake.

To prevent injury or death, never work under a machine while a test is being performed.

Personal injury or death can result from lifting a heavy component.

The heavy component can fall if using an incorrect hoist and/or sling or fastener to lift the load.

Be sure the hoist and other devices have the correct lifting capacity to lift a heavy component. The approximate weight of the heavy component is given below.

Note: There are two identical propel pumps on the machine. One pump is for the right propel and one pump is for the left propel. This test should be performed on both sides of the machine. If you notice that there is a difference in performance on both sides of the machine, a synchronization may need to be performed. Refer to Test and Adjust Procedure, "Pump Synchronization - Test and Adjust" in order to synchronize the propel pumps.

  1. Raise the machine. Use the appropriate lifting equipment and heed the warnings within this test. Use equipment that is authorized by AVSpare dealers only. The equipment must be rated for the weight of the machine. Table 3 is listed above for a reference of weight and dimension of the AP-655C Ashaplt Paver. Both of the tracks should be off of the ground for this test.

    The Left Final Drive Planetary

  1. Place 1U-6605 Reflective Tape (A2) on the planetary so that the tape is perpendicular to the machine. Repeat this process for the other side of the machine.

  1. Clear all personnel away from the machine except the operator and an assistant. Start the engine. Run the engine high idle.

    Right Side Operator Station

    (1) Speed potentiometer dial

    (2) Parking brake

    (3) Speed control switch

  1. Place speed potentiometer dial (1) at 100%. This is done by turning the knob fully to the clockwise position.

  1. Place speed control switch (3) to the PAVE position.

  1. Release parking brake (2) .

  1. Move the propel lever to the FORWARD position.

    Note: The assistant should be approximately 1.25 m (4 ft) during the test.

  1. Use 1U-7771 Photo-Tachometer (A1) and point the tachometer directly at 1U-6605 Reflective Tape (A2) on the final drive planetary.

  1. The reading for the FORWARD position should be 26 ± 1.5 RPM. Record your reading. Repeat this step on the other side of the machine.

  1. Place the propel lever in the NEUTRAL position. Then move the propel lever to the REVERSE position.

  1. The reading for the REVERSE position should be 26 ± 1.5 RPM. Record your reading. Repeat this step on the other side of the machine.

  1. Place the propel lever in the NEUTRAL position. Stop the engine. Engage the parking brake.

  1. Clear all personnel from the machine. Lower the machine. Use the same guidelines and safety precautions as raising the machine in this test.

  1. If the readings are not within these limits, refer to Troubleshooting Manual, KENR5036-00 for a possible solution.
