Power from the engine is transfered to the transfer gears through a coupling. Power is then transfered through direction clutches to the transmission that is contained in the transfer case. Power flows through the transmission directly to the differential and bevel gear. The differential and bevel gear transfers power to the final drives. The final drives transfer power to the chains. The chains drive the wheels. The following motor graders are covered in this module:

The Power Train system has the following main components:

  • Transmission Control Valve

  • Transmission and Transfer Gears

  • Differential and Bevel Gear

  • Final Drive and Tandem Drive

Transmission Control Valve

The transmission control valve provides the proper flow and pressure in order to engage the desired transmission clutches. The transmission control valve contains the following major components:

  • Main Relief Valve

  • Selector and Pressure Control Valve

  • Differential Lock Valve

Transmission

The motor graders that are covered in this manual are equipped with a power shift transmission. The transmission has eight forward speeds and eight reverse speeds. The transmission is manually controlled and hydraulically actuated.

Differential and Bevel Gear

The differential and bevel gear is used to transfer power from the transmission to the final drives. The differential allows the wheels to turn at different rates of speed when the machine is going through a turn. The differential can be locked by the differential lock valve.

Final Drive and Tandem Drive

The final drive is used to transfer power to the wheels. The wheels are connected to the final drive by chains. The chains are located inside the tandem housing. The final drive is also used as the pivot point for the tandem housing.
