The axle is used to transmit power from the propel motor to the rear wheels. Power from the axle "Propel" motor goes through final drive planetary (4) to limited slip differential (1) . The power from the limited slip differential goes through the left and right planetary gears to the axle shafts. The axle shafts have flanges (3) and (6) in order to mount the wheels. The wheels transfer the power to the ground.

Friction discs (10) (11) in the limited slip differential are used to transfer power from the final drive planetary to the axle shafts.

When traveling straight with traction at both wheels, both axles connected to the side gears inside the differential housing are moving at the same speed, and the clutches are not needed. The only time the clutches are used is when something happens to make one wheel spin faster than the other. The clutches fight this behavior, wanting both wheels to go the same speed. If one wheel wants to spin faster than the other, the wheel must first overpower the clutch. The side gears attached to the axles, start to spin at different speeds. The internal housing of the differential (15) holding the side gear shaft (16) is split or "V" notched where the pin is situated and causes the gears to oppose one another pushing against the friction discs. Friction of the clutch determines how much torque it takes to overpower the clutch. The friction material determines how much torque is transferred to the other axle. These clutches are made to transfer approximately 30 – 35%.
