The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

Some couplers for the listed machines may have difficulty in engaging work tools.

Solution

If your machine's coupler has difficulty in attaching a work tool, perform the following procedure.

Note: For this procedure, use one of the following buckets:

  • For 246C, 256C, 262C, and 272C machines, use the 279-5372 General Purpose Bucket As or the 279-5373 General Purpose Bucket Ar .

  • For 277C, 287C, and 297C machines, use the 279-5376 General Purpose Bucket As or the 279-5377 General Purpose Bucket Ar .

  1. Attach the coupler to one of the recommended buckets. Refer to "Work Tool Coupler Operation" in the "Operation" section of your Operation and Maintenance Manual.

    • For manual couplers, move levers (1) in order to engage coupler pins (3) .

    • For Hydraulic couplers, activate the Work Tool Coupler Control in order to engage coupler pins (3) .

  1. Verify that control lever linkages (4) are in the correct "over center" position, as shown. See Illustration 2.

Note: If the handles cannot be fully engaged or if the linkages are not in the "over center" position, proceed to Step 4.

Checking the engagement of the coupler pins

    (W) 13 mm (0.5118 inch)

  1. Raise the bucket so that you can inspect the coupler pin. Without standing under the bucket, verify that the engagement of the coupler pins (3) is equal to or greater than 13 mm (0.5118 inch) on the left side and on the right side. See Illustration 3.

If the engagement is less than the specified value, continue with Step 4.

Note: Equal engagement of the coupler pins on both sides is not required. However, the engagement of each coupler pin must be equal to or greater than the specified value.

  1. Lower the bucket and remove the bucket from the coupler.

Refer to "Work Tool Coupler Operation" in the "Operation" section of your Operation and Maintenance Manual.

Grind the top rear edge of the coupler.

    (X) 1.0 mm (0.04 inch)

    (Y) 25 mm (0.9 inch)

  1. Use a hand grinder and remove material from the top rear edge of the coupler, as shown. See Illustration 4. The depth of the grind should be 1.0 mm (0.04 inch) or less.

Note: Only grind the side of the coupler that did not meet the specified value of engagement.

  1. Repeat Step 1 through Step 3 in order to recheck the engagement of the coupler pins.

  1. If necessary, repeat Step 4 and Step 5.

  1. When the rework has been completed, paint any exposed metal surfaces.
