Dear Cat Product Owner:

The rear entry cab roof hatch door latch needs to be reworked on the products listed below. The existing hatch latch can seize. Seizure of the latch can prevent rotation and release of the hatch latch mechanism, not allowing the roof hatch to be opened and may, in conjunction with other factors or circumstances, result in a risk of personal injury or death. You will not be charged for the service performed.

Contact your local Cat dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.

If you are no longer the owner of this product(s), please contact your local Cat dealer so that our records can be updated.

Rework Procedure

1. Remove the internal roof hatch handle and latch bracket by removing the 509-5497 Roll Pin and loosening the latch bracket set screw. A new replacement 509-5497 Roll Pin will be used when reassembling the handle onto the latch shaft. Refer to Image1.1.1.
Image1.1.1

2. Remove the two 506-4758 Screws that secure the external latch T-handle. Refer to Image1.2.1.

Note: The 506-4758 Screws may need to be replaced during reassembly if either screw breaks or otherwise fails during removal.
Image1.2.1

3. The latch assembly may be difficult to remove from the roof hatch because of the silicone sealant. Lightly tap the latch shaft in the direction of the red arrow shown in Image1.3.1 while simultaneously pulling on the T-handle in an upward direction until the handle is separated from the roof hatch.
Image1.3.1

4. Remove the 509-5496 Latch Block and remove the existing silicone sealant from the surface of the block. Additionally, clean out the bore surface within the latch block.

Note: The 509-5496 Latch Block may need to be replaced during reassembly of the roof hatch latch if the 506-4758 Screws are broken while attempting to remove in Step 2.

5. Remove the 506-4759 Latch Gasket and existing silicone sealant surrounding the latch gasket from the top surface of the roof hatch. Clean the latch pin bore in the roof hatch of all contaminants, rust, etc. Refer to Image1.5.1.
Image1.5.1

6. Clean rust and other contaminants from latch pin surfaces (A). Remove existing 1H-1023 O-Ring Seal (B). Refer to Image1.6.1.

7. Install a new 1H-1023 O-Ring Seal on latch pin shaft (B). Lubricate the O-ring seal by applying Loctite LB 8042 White Lithium Grease or equivalent to the surface of the O-ring seal. Refer to Image1.6.1.

8. Apply Loctite LB 8023 Marine Grade Anti-Seize or equivalent to the latch pin in designated area (C). Refer to Image1.6.1.
Image1.6.1

9. Apply fresh Loctite SI 5049 SpeedSeal RTV Silicone or equivalent to the top surface of the 509-5496 Latch Block (D),?and press into place on the inside surface of the roof hatch. Wipe away any excess silicone that squeezed out from the top of the 509-5496 latch block. The 509-5496 Latch Block will need to be replaced if the mounting screws broke previously during disassembly of the latch. Refer to Image1.7.1.

10. Install a new 506-4759 latch gasket (E) between the top surface of the cab roof hatch and the T-handle latch base. Refer to Image1.7.1.

11. Install the T-handle back into place, ensuring that the latch pin (K) is completely seated in the pin bore (pin is completely seated when the bottom of the T-handle latch base is touching the surface of the roof hatch and gasket). Refer to Image1.7.1.

12. Apply Loctite 5049 Silicone directly into both screw holes in the T-handle base (G), and drive 506-4758 screws snugly into the 509-5496 latch block. Refer to Image1.7.1.

13. Apply Loctite 5049 Silicone around the perimeter of the 506-4759 rubber gasket (H). Refer to Image1.7.1.
Image1.7.1

14. Install 597-0651 Bracket Assembly (M)?on the latch shaft and tighten the set screw to hold the bracket assembly in place. Do not completely tighten. Refer to Image1.8.1.

Note: Ensure that the bracket assembly is properly oriented during assembly onto the shaft.

15. Reinstall 506-4757 Handle (N) and new 509-5497 Roll Pin (P). Refer to Image1.8.1.
Image1.8.1

16. Adjust the height of 597-0651 Bracket Assembly (M) along the latch shaft to adjust the clamping force on the roof hatch. Ensure that when completely seated, the latch holds the roof hatch securely in place and when rotating the handle with slight downward pressure, the latch can disengage. Fully tighten the 597-0641 bracket assembly set screw after the bracket height has been set and verified for proper adjustment.

Refer to Image1.9.1 and 1.9.2.
