This publication contains the information for installation of the improved 317-2428 Steering Valve Gp . This supplemental product support literature should be used with the appropriate Service Manual and the appropriate Parts Manual that is available for this standard machine.

Until you understand the information that is contained in this document, do not:

Removal of the Former Steering Lines Group

Connect the steering frame lock between the front and rear frames before working on the machine.

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Release the pressure from the steering system. Refer to Systems Operation Testing and Adjusting, RENR4606, "R1300 LHD ", "Steering System".

  1. Discard the following parts: 4J-0520 O-Ring Seals (1), 1P-4577 Half Flanges (2), 5S-7383 Bolts (4), 186-9737 Restrictor Plates (5), 4J-5267 O-Ring Seals (6), and 312-5405 Hose As (9) .

    Note: Retain 1P-4576 Half Flanges (7), 4L-9337 Bolts (8) and eight 8T-4896 Hard Washers (3) for assembly.

  1. Remove the following parts: 8T-8916 Bolts (2), 8T-5360 Washers (3), 1P-4578 Half Flanges (4), 312-5406 Hose As (1), and 4J-0522 O-Ring Seals (5) .

  1. Discard the following parts: 312-5406 Hose As (1), 4J-0522 O-Ring Seals (5), four 8T-8916 Bolts (2), four 8T-5360 Washers (3), and two 1P-4578 Half Flanges (4) .

    Note: Retain four 8T-8916 Bolts (2), four 8T-5360 Washers (3), and two 1P-4578 Half Flanges (4) for assembly.

    Note: Retain 9B-7237 Bolts (2), 5P-1075 Hard Washers (3), four 5P-8244 Hard Washers (7), four 8T-8916 Bolts (8), and two 1P-4578 Half Flanges (9) for assembly.

  1. Discard the following parts: 186-9530 Mount (3), two 9B-7237 Bolts (1), 6V-8801 Nuts (4), 163-1688 Steering Valve (5), 5S-2388 Bolts (6), and 6V-8188 Nuts (7) .

    Note: Retain four 9B-7237 Bolts (1) and four 5P-1075 Hard Washers (2) for assembly.

  1. Install 9X-7423 Seal (19) to 252-9331 Fitting (18) .

  1. Install 6V-0408 Bonded Seals (21) to 6V-3527 Flared Fittings (22) .

  1. Install 093-1321 Plugs (9), 6V-3527 Flared Fittings (22), 252-9331 Fitting (18) and 242-3724 Elbow (17) to 252-9314 Steering Valve (6) .

  1. Install a 3J-1907 O-Ring Seal (11) to 030-7942 Elbow (12), and 6V-3965 Fitting As (14) .

  1. Install the following parts to 252-9314 Steering Valve (6) : 171-9653 Fittings (10), 5I-3190 Fitting (13), 030-7942 Elbow (12), 6V-3965 Fitting As (14), and 6V-0852 Dust Cap (15) .

  1. Install 314-1412 Mounting Plate (7) using the following parts: 9B-7237 Bolts (1) and 5P-1075 Hard Washers (2) .

  1. Install 252-9314 Steering Valve (6) using the following parts: 8T-4186 Bolts (3), 8T-4121 Hard Washers (4), and 9M-4136 Spacers (5) .

  1. Remove the former hose assembly. Install new 285-4413 Hose As (7) .

  1. Install 242-3717 Hose As (1) between the hydraulic pump and the steering valve. Refer to Illustration 8.

  1. Install two 242-2634 Hose As (1) to the steering valve. Refer to Illustration 9.

Steering System Pressure - Test and Adjust

Use the following procedure to test and adjust the steering system pressure for the 252-9314 Steering Valve .

    (1) Steering frame lock

  1. Install steering frame lock (1) so that the machine cannot turn.

    (2) Pressure tap for the steering system

  1. Remove the protective cover from pressure tap (2). Connect a hose assembly with the 8T-0859 Pressure Gauge to pressure tap (2) .

  1. Start the engine. Operate the engine at the high idle rpm with the transmission in the NEUTRAL position.

  1. Turn the machine against the steering frame lock. The relief valve will open.

  1. Observe the pressure gauge while attempting to turn the machine in both directions. The reading on the gauge should be 17250 ± 550 kPa (2500 ± 80 psi).

  1. Stop the engine.

  1. If the pressure reading is to specifications, proceed to Step 12. If the pressure reading is not correct, proceed to Step 8.

  1. Loosen locknut (3) .

  1. Turn pressure adjusting screw (4) clockwise to increase the pressure setting and counterclockwise to decrease the pressure setting.

  1. Tighten locknut (3) to a torque of 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  1. Repeat Steps 3 through 7.

  1. Remove the pressure gauge from the pressure tap. Place the protective cover on the pressure tap.

  1. Remove the steering frame lock.

Machine Preparation

Note: The steering frame lock must be installed to complete the line relief valves test.

Note: Start the engine. Run the engine at high idle. Increase the temperature of the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature.

Note: To set a line relief valve (2), the steering relief valve (1) setting must be higher than the setting for line relief valve (2). Refer to Table 4 for the steering relief valve (1) setting. Refer to Table 5 for the line relief valve (2) settings.

Note: Do not move the STIC steering control for more than 5 seconds while the pressure is at the line relief valve setting. Rapid heating of the hydraulic oil may occur.

Testing the Line Relief Valves

  1. Release the pressure from the steering system. Refer to Systems Operation Testing and Adjusting, RENR4606, "R1300 LHD", "Steering System".

  1. Connect the 8T-0859 Pressure Gauge to pressure tap (5) .

    Note: Steering relief valve (1) has a lower setting than steering cylinder head end line relief valve (3) and the rod end line relief valve. Temporarily increase the steering relief valve (1) setting to set line relief valve (4) .

  1. Start the engine. Raise the lift arms so that the bucket is clear of the ground.

  1. Increase the engine to high idle rpm. Hold the STIC steering control in the full RIGHT TURN position to test the rod end line relief valve.

  1. Record the pressure reading from the pressure gauge that is connected to pressure tap (5) .

    If the pressure reading does not agree with the value in Table 5, proceed to ""Adjusting the Line Relief Valve" ".

    If the pressure reading agrees with the value in Table 5, proceed to 6.

  1. Increase the engine to high idle rpm. Hold the STIC steering control in the full LEFT TURN position to test the head end line relief valve.

  1. Record the pressure reading from the pressure gauge that is connected to pressure tap (5) .

    If the pressure reading does not agree with the value in Table 5, proceed to ""Adjusting the Line Relief Valve" ".

    If the pressure reading agrees with the value in Table 5, proceed to Step ""Remove Test Equipment" ".

Adjusting the Line Relief Valve

  1. Refer to Illustration 13 for the location of the line relief valves (1) .

  1. Loosen locknut (7). Turn adjusting screw (6) clockwise to increase line relief valve (4) setting.

  1. Turn adjusting screw (6) counterclockwise to decrease line relief valve (4) setting.

  1. After adjusting screw (6) is turned for an adjustment, tighten locknut (7) to a torque of 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  1. Test line relief valve (4) pressure. Refer to ""Testing the Line Relief Valves" ".

Remove Test Equipment

  1. Set steering relief valve (1) to the pressure in Table 4.

    ReferenceFor additional information on setting steering relief valve (1), refer to ""Steering System Pressure - Test and Adjust" " in this publication.

  1. When the pressure settings are correct, stop the engine and release the pressure from the steering system. Refer to Systems Operation Testing and Adjusting, RENR4606, "R1300 LHD", "Steering System".

  1. Remove the test equipment.
