- 1. Drain water and sediment from the fuel tank.
- 2. Check the alternator, regulator, and battery wiring and connections.
- 3. Check the engine air inlet and exhaust systems.
- 4. Clean the batteries and check the electrolyte level.
Lubricate those points shown in the service chart.
Draining Water From The Fuel Tank
DIESEL FUEL IS VOLATILE AND COULD IGNITE OR EXPLODE, CAUSING SERIOUS BURNS AND INJURIES FROM FLYING OBJECTS. NEVER SMOKE OR HAVE AN OPEN FLAME WHILE WORKING ON THE FUEL SYSTEM. |
At the start of each shift or after the tank has been filled and allowed to stand for 5 or 10 minutes, close the main fuel shutoff valve to prevent air from being drawn into the fuel tank, then open the condensation trap drain valve under the fuel tank. Allow any accumulated water and sediment to drain, then close the condensation trap drain valve and open the main fuel shutoff valve. In cold weather, drain the water immediately after stopping the engine to prevent the water from freezing in the condensation trap.
Checking The Alternator, Regulator, And Battery Wiring And Connections
Visually check the wiring for damage such as broken insulation and frayed wires. Check for loose or corroded connections. Repair as necessary.
Cleaning The Batteries
- 1. Mix a weak solution of baking soda and water. Apply the solution with a bristle brush.
- 2. Thoroughly rinse the batteries and battery box with clean water.
- 3. Apply grease to the battery cable clamps and terminals and to all threads.
NOTICE |
---|
BE CAREFUL TO KEEP ANY OF THE BAKING SODA FROM GETTING INTO THE BATTERY CELLS OR THE BATTERY WILL BE DAMAGED. |
Checking Battery Electrolyte Level
- 1. Maintain electrolyte level to base of each vent well.
- 2. Make-up water must be one of the following (in order of preference):
- a. Distilled water.
- b. Odorless, tasteless drinking water.
- c. Iron free water.
- d. Any available water.
- b. Odorless, tasteless drinking water.
Checking The Engine Air Inlet And Exhaust Systems
Check all clamps, bolts, and ducting on the engine air inlet and exhaust systems. Service as necessary to prevent any leaks and to ensure that the air cleaner and muffler are securely mounted.
