Block under blade or arms if moldboard or implement must be raised for servicing.

Wear a hard hat, safety glasses and/or respirator if job conditions require.


Do not wear jewelry or loose clothing that could catch on controls.

Do not smoke while fueling.

Lower equipment and stop engine before making any adjustments.

Keep engine compartment free of oil, fuel and trash.

Keep operator's compartment clean.

Preparing To Operate

Report needed repairs.

Fill fuel tank to avoid unplanned stops.

Make certain all safety guards and covers are in place.

Keep front axle and steering mechanism, tandem drive housings and blade control linkage clean.

Know hand signals and who gives them.

Check tandem wheel brake lines.

Start and operate engine only in well ventilated area.

Maintain good vision by keeping cab and windshield clean.

Make sure motor grader is equipped with proper lighting system, if required by conditions or law.

Clear obstacles from path of machine - note hazards such as wires.

Set parking brake before starting engine and before leaving machine.

Do not jump off machine, use steps or grab irons.

Remove or secure all loose items such as lunch buckets, chains, shovels, etc.

Install clearance flags and other warning devices, if required by conditions or law.

Be particularly careful on machines you do not usually operate. Be sure you understand all control functions.

Mounting And Dismounting

Always lower all equipment before dismounting.

Shut off engine and set parking brake before leaving machine.

Checking Controls

Check all controls for proper operation.

Test engine governor control lever and accelerator.

Test right and left steering while moving slowly. Test brakes.

Listen for and report any unusual noises.

Check function of safety devices such as lights, back-up alarms, etc.

Use extreme care to avoid tipping when working on hills, banks or slopes.

Keep close to inside bank when working on sidehill road or cut. Extend blade to move material near outer edge.

Block and tie motor grader securely when shipping.


Do not allow riders on motor grader or implement.

Look behind machine before and while backing.

Know your stopping distance at any given speed. Regulate travel speed accordingly.

Dim front lights for oncoming traffic at night. When stopping at night, pull off road and set out flares or reflectors.

Stay clear of overhangs, electric wires, slide areas or other danger areas.

Be careful when operating with wheels at right angle to a slope.

Hitch trailing equipment to hitch only.

Operate controls from seat only. Get help for jobs such as adjusting links.

Operate motor grader only on level surface when cutting high banks.

Stay safe distance from edge of cliff or overhang.

Keep personnel from between motor grader and equipment when hooking up. Block tongue or hitch of implement to align it with hitch.

Stop at all intersections and proceed with caution. Obey all traffic regulations.

Cross obstacles at an angle and at slow speed. Be alert for jolt when going over center of obstacle.

Match speed with job conditions - do not coast.

Keep machine under control - do not try to exceed machine capacity.

Use extra caution in crossing sidehills, ridges, ditches and other obstructions.

Do not park in traffic areas.
